Leaving Waste on Your Carpet

It is normal for 15% to 20% of a roll of carpet to be left over from the cutting and seaming process. This extra material can be saved to use in DIY projects or for future repairs.

Installing Carpet

Putting Down the Tackstrip and Padding

Before carpet is installed, it should be laid over a layer of padding to give it a solid foundation and make it easier for you to walk on. The padding extends the life of the carpet and provides a comfortable surface for the foot.

Tack strips are placed around the perimeter of the carpeting to help hold it in place. This step is especially important if your floor is uneven or there are any protrusions in the flooring. The teeth of the tack strip should be bent towards the wall and leave a half-inch gap between the tack strip and the wall.

You can use a nail gun to nail the tackless strip in place, but it is easier and less expensive to use a staple gun. Then, you can lay down the pad and trim to the front of the tackless strip. Once the pad is down, use duct tape to join and seal the seam in between the sheets.

Finishing Your Installation

Once the tackstrip is in place, you can start laying the new carpet. If you have a carpet with a pattern, you will need to apply seam adhesive along the edge of the carpet. This helps to keep the carpet in place and prevents it from ripping or shedding.
